Sentences without nominative subjects in Japanese *

چکیده
<1> Introduction It is generally assumed that in a language with the accusative case system a sentence with a finite predicate must have the subject NP marked with the nominative case. The abstract Case system developed by the Principles and Parameters approach (PPA) is based on this assumption, using the mechanism of the nominative and accusative Case checking for licensing the NPs with the structural functions of sentence building, namely the subject and the object.

Animacy or Case Marker Order?: Priority Information for Online Sentence Comprehension in a Head-Final Language
It is well known that case marker information and animacy information are incrementally used to comprehend sentences in head-final languages. However, it is still unclear how these two kinds of information are processed when they are in competition in a sentence's surface expression. The current study used sentences conveying the potentiality of some event (henceforth, potential sentences) in t...
متن کاملMultiple Nominative Constructions in Japanese and Their Theoretical Implications
This paper studies the derivation of multiple nominative constructions (MNC) in Japanese. First, discussing the MNC-sentences in which there is a relation of inalienable possession between nominative noun phrases, I will argue that the set of local economy principles that choose among potentially possible steps at a single stage of a derivation contains a principle that minimizes the size of mo...
متن کاملThe Effect of -ga Sequences on Processing Japanese Multiply Center-Embedded Sentences
This study investigated the effect of more than two consecutive NPs bearing the nominative case-marker -ga on the processing difficulty associated with Japanese multiply center-embedded sentences. Experiment 1 found that NP-ga sequences are rated substantially less favorably for processability ratings than their matched counterparts; thus, theories that predict processing load must offer an acc...
متن کاملTopicalization and Truth Conditions: A Categorial Grammar Account∗
In this paper we will consider how the choice between the topic marker wa and nominative marker for subjects affects truth conditions of sentences. We derive the proper interpretations for sentences with topics and nominative subjects in terms of syntaxsemantics interface. The categorial framework adopted here allows us to account for significant difference in meaning with respect to the choice...
متن کاملPossessor Relations and the Interpretation of Nominative NPs in Japanese
Japanese speakers start interpreting sentences even before the clause-ending predicate is read or heard. We report two questionnaire studies that suggest that the possible semantic relations between NPs are critical in determining the interpretations pursued. Although the properties of individual NPs such as animacy are important, interpretation is modulated by the relations that may hold betwe...
